The Ruby Red story
It all started when Martine left her high-flying career, packed a bag and began a life-changing journey through Asia (parts that tourists never normally experience) with her partner Mike, a designer by trade. “We left with a change of clothes and a Lonely Planet book,” says Martine, “and travelled for over a year leading a simple life, really getting to know the local people.” It was there that they discovered a culture where beauty is more about natural ingredients and traditional techniques then sterile white rooms and chemicals.
Inspired by what she had seen, once back in England, Martine began sourcing the best organic ingredients and with her experience in fragrance and cosmetics, started mixing natural bath and body care formulations for friends and family. “I was keen to combine organic vegetable oils with great aromas and gorgeous packaging. People around me were so enthusiastic, I soon started selling my natural products at Portobello Market” says Martine “and Ruby Red was born”. It wasn’t long before Ruby Red caught the eye of respected eco-boutiques in London like Luscious Organics who started stocking the range. “Ruby Red’s beauty products are truly wonderful” says Luscious Organics’ co-owner Dragana Brown. “I love the fact that the range is so beautifully packaged. They’re certainly a favourite among our customers and staff.”
Today Ruby Red can be found in selected High Street retailers such as Harvey Nichols and Planet Organic along with well known e-tailer Amazon. “We haven’t changed any of our winning formulations” says Martine, “so the products you buy online today are still hand made by us, in our London workshop, using fantastic organic ingredients.”
Why organic?
Organic means that our ingredients come from plants grown without the use of artificial pesticides and herbicides, in soil free from artificial fertilizers and genetic modification. This means that no chemicals are used in the growing, processing or making of any of the Ruby Red products. And as the latest statistics show that as much as 60% of what you put on the skin is absorbed into the blood stream, this means your skin is getting the full benefit of richer, more effective ingredients, without any nasties. Hurrah!
Planet positive
Look closely at our gorgeous packaging, and you won’t find any plastic, just recyclable or biodegradeable containers, all beautifully wrapped with a flourish in paper and raffia, from sustainable material. Janet from Rotherham likes to store sweeties in her used kilner jars from our Organic Body Smoothing Scrub range, what will you put in yours?
Our teeny ingredient lists
All of our ingredients are derived directly from nature, with no artificial colours, parabens or other chemical nasties, and we are proud to have some of the shortest ingredient lists ever. Our trademark rich Ruby Red aromas are created by organic essential oils, blended in our workshop and mixed with only the very best organic vegetable oils – never animal fats or petroleum based ingredients. Not a single ingredient is heated during the manufacturing process, creating the purest beauty products possible.
Chemicals? No way!
At Ruby Red we’ve never thought that chemicals make for a good look. That means we promise our products contain strictly no synthetic fragrances, no artificial colours and certainly no petroleum-based or animal-derived nasties – just 100% natural goodness for your skin. Perfect for veggies.
Not tested on animals
We only test our cosmetics on friendly people – never on animals. We are strongly against animal testing and because we only use natural products, they have all been tested for centuries by people like you.
Purely ethical
As a company we insist on choosing organic ingredients from strictly ethical sources – all our suppliers are certified organic and vetted to ensure that they follow Fair Trade principles – buying goods at a fair price so that everyone benefits. Our organic shea butter is ethically sourced from a women’s co-operative in Ghana who’ve been able to purchase their organic certification through all our support. And we’re really excited this year about supporting a co-operative in Nepal who hand craft our great gift boxes using recycled waste paper, cotton rags, banana fibres and corn husks. Who’d have thought recycling could look so good?!
Happy people!
And lastly, here at Ruby Red, we’re hoping to spread a little happiness so that we make life better for all. We want happy customers and we try not to let you down, if we do please call us and we will try to put it right.
